- Course overview

Three main aims to teach the IPC units

To help students

⑴ develop an international mindset alongside their awareness of their own cultural identity.
<Dimensions of Understanding: Purposes>

⑵ learn the subject knowledge, skills and understandings they need to become aware of the world around them. 
<Dimensions of Understanding: Knowledge>

⑶ develop the personal skills they need to take an active part in the world throughout their lives.

Course-long understanding goals (Throughlines)

・Why should I learn about Japan? Is it important to me? (Purposes)
Students will begin to understand that we are highly diverse in language and culture, and learning about other countries is important to becoming a world citizen. Students will also begin to understand about regarding every culture equally and fairly, and have non-biased cultural views. (IPC aims (1), National Standards 5.1, 5.2)

・How can I learn about Japan? (Methods)
Students will understand how to observe things that are around them and to build explanations and interpretations based on observation and reasons to make sense of the world. They will learn how to explain, listen to others, take part in reflective discussion, planning and observing.  Students will also start to understand that trying things out, using exploration and curiosity as important and valued ways of learning.Those learning will lead them to life-long learners. (IPC aims (3), National Standards 1.1, 3.2)

・How are we different? How are we alike? How do we affect one other? (Knowledge)
Students will develop insight into the target language and culture by learning how a different language system operates, how languages influence one another, and how different cultures express ideas. Students also begin to understand some of the similarities and differences between the lives of children in the different home countries and in the host country, and there is value both in the similarities and differences.  (IPC aims (2), National Standards 4.1, 4.2)
