Grade 4 Japanese Culture

- Course overview

Three main aims to teach the IPC units

To help students

⑴ develop an international mindset alongside their awareness of their own cultural identity.
<Dimensions of Understanding: Purposes>

⑵ learn the subject knowledge, skills and understandings they need to become aware of the world around them.
<Dimensions of Understanding: Knowledge>

⑶ develop the personal skills they need to take an active part in the world throughout their lives.
<Dimensions of Understanding: Methods>

Course-long understanding goals (Throughlines)

・ Why should I learn about Japan? What is the value of learning about other cultures/countries?  (Purpose)
Students will begin to understand that we are highly diverse in language, culture, history, and learning about other countries is important to becoming a world citizen. Students will not only understand that there is value both in the similarities and differences between countries, but also begin to understand about regarding every culture equally and fairly, and have non-biased cultural views.
(IPC aims (1), National Standards 5.1, 5.2)

・How can we learn about Japan? How can we learn about our own culture from studying another?  (Methods)
Through an in depth comparison between Japanese culture and that of their own country, students will come to understand how the two are closely connected. Comparing different cultures and languages raises students' cultural understanding and linguistic awareness.
(IPC aims (3), National Standards 4.2)

・How did Japanese culture grow? Why did it grow differently than mine?  (Knowledge)
Students will understand that our culture can be an expression of our sense of self and the world we belong to. Environment, geography, history, politics, economic activities, society and faith influence the development of culture, and at times, cultures have different perspectives. Students will start to understand culture is not just knowledge but a living and vital entity, and learn to respect it through experiences.
(IPC aims (2), National Standards 2.1, 2.2, 3.2)
